Sea-Life Benalmadena is Andalucia’s first ever interactive sea life centre. Surrounded by over 50.000 litres of water Sea-Life is the perfect place from which to discover the mysteries of underwater life. You will be privy to more than 3000 sea creatures including sting rays and sharks, some more than two meters long.
Upon arriving at the sea centre you will be greeted by the smell of seaweed and brine. This comes from a perfect recreation of our local shores, complete with gently lapping waves and a bounty of information as well as live examples of the species which inhabit our coastal shores.
These shores will eventually lead you to the sting ray enclosure, a friendly breed of sea life which you will be able to touch and feed. This direct contact with sea life is a recurring feature of the park and you will get the chance to handle other sea creatures such as starfish, sea anemones and other interesting species.
Once you have (literally) got to grips with the local sea life the next stage of the journey is the mysterious world of the sea serpents which leads you into a huge underground tank. This tank, which has capacity of 250,000 litres, is a great place from which to observe many tropical creatures including numerous species of shark. This is a fascinating feature of the park which will give you first hand knowledge of the habits of these creatures as they swim and act as if they would in their natural habitat.
The hidden paradise of the Amazon is the next stage of the journey, full of countless colourful and exotic species displayed among waterfalls and enormous trees. Electric eels with the capacity to light bulbs of up to 500 watts and voracious piranhas are a feature of this area. If you are lucky you will get to see the feeding of the piranhas and be witness to their savage appetite as they devour their prey in seconds.
The centre offers much to see in terms of variety of sea life, they are also constantly adding to their range making it interesting for even the most regular visitor. One of the new additions are the sea serpents, the only exhibition of its kind in Spain. These animals are incredibly adaptable and can survive both in water and on land. They also have venom 40 times more poisonous than the cobra, which is why transporting them to the Sea Life Centre has been a high risk operation carried out by experienced professionals.
There are plenty of skilled professionals who form part of the Sea Life team at Benalmadena, including marine biologists who take part in research and conservation schemes. These include breeding projects that have been carried out with a great deal of success. Biologists have accomplished the reproduction of stingrays, pintarojo sharks and seahorses in captivity.
Sea-Life also works closely with (C.R.E.M.A), the Centre for the Recuperation of Marine Species with whom they have developed an important project for the rescue of sea turtles in their Marine Hospital. The hospital is specially designed to cater for sea mammals, fish and amphibians that are in need of recuperation, enabling them to be reintroduced back into the sea with good chances of survival and reproduction. By purchasing a ticket to the aquarium every visitor will be contributing towards these worthwhile projects.
